Series Summary
Wisconsin Philanthropy Network’s Grantmaking Fundamentals series is designed to help those who are new to philanthropy—or those wanting to update their skills—gain confidence in the essentials of effective grantmaking. By digging into both the building blocks of the field and current trends shaping the sector, participants will develop the working knowledge needed to navigate philanthropy with clarity and purpose.
This series will be facilitated by Wisconsin Philanthropy Network in collaboration with experienced grantmakers and content experts from across the state. Detailed session descriptions can be found here.
Whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned leader, this is your opportunity to gain new skills in the essentials of effective grantmaking.
Who can attend?
These events are created for staff, board and/or committee members of grantmaking organizations in (or investing in) Wisconsin who are either:
- New to grantmaking and seeking a strong foundation
- Looking to refresh their understanding of the fundamentals and sharpen their practice.

Session Dates/Times: Sessions will be hosted virtually from 10:00am-12:00pm on the first and third Tuesday of each month beginning February 3 and ending May 5.
- Full Series Costs:
- Member $375 | Non-Member $450
- Discounted pricing available for multiple member registrations
- Individual Session Costs:
- Member $75 | Non-Member $100

Explore the history and evolving landscape of philanthropy, with a look at today’s most pressing issues.
Session 2: Inside the Grantmaking Process
Walk through the lifecycle of a grant, from inquiry to reporting, with attention to diligence best practices and strategies for sound decision-making.
Session 3: Building Authentic Relationships in Philanthropy
Examine how power shows up in philanthropy and learn strategies for building trust-based, equitable relationships.
Session 4: Legal and Ethical Essentials
Understand the legal guardrails and ethical dilemmas grantmakers face, including rules around lobbying, self-dealing, and conflicts of interest.
Session 5: Understanding Nonprofit Financial Health
Learn how to read nonprofit financials, assess organizational health, and weigh risk in funding decisions.
Session 6: Impact and Learning in Practice
Consider approaches to evaluating grants and measuring impact, including participatory and equity-centered methods.
Session 7: Impact Investing 101
A primer on program-related and mission-related investments as tools to advance charitable goals.
