Designed as a shorter version of our complete six session, Grantmaker Boot Camp. This one-day program brings three local experts together to share current information on the fundamentals of grantmaking.


Navigating Legal & Ethical Issues with Jason Kohout, Foley & Lardner LLP

Understand: 1) Basic laws and regulations affecting grantmaking; 2) Ethical issues common to grantmakers and 3) Strategies for managing ethical challenges
Be Able to: 1) Conduct grantmaking that is within customary due diligence requirements and 2) Recognize and manage ethical challenges

Making Sound Funding Decisions with Scott Gelzer, Management Cornerstones (previously Executive Director of The Faye McBeath Foundation)

Understand: 1) Key characteristics of effective nonprofits; 2) Typical steps and best practices used in the proposal review process; and 3) Issues to consider in arriving at a funding recommendation
Be Able to: 1) Assess the viability of the applicant and proposed project; 2) Know how and what additional information to gather; and 3) Make defensible funding decisions

Managing the Grant Portfolio with Erin Frederick, Zilber Family Foundation

Understand: 1) Standard expectations and requirements of grants management; and 2) Typical issues and effective practices for grants management
Be Able to: 1) Monitor grants and support grantee success; 2) Anticipate and manage grant execution; and 3) Learn from grant experiences
