Trust-Based Philanthropy

Centering trust to build stronger, more responsive partnerships.

Trust-Based Philanthropy is a growing movement that reimagines how funders work—centering relationships, transparency, and multi-year, unrestricted support. It acknowledges that those closest to the work are best positioned to lead change and calls on funders to shift from transactional grantmaking toward deeper, more equitable partnerships.

By reducing administrative burdens, providing flexible funding, and prioritizing trust, philanthropy becomes more responsive, effective, and aligned with nonprofit needs. Through this initiative, WPN shares lessons from grantmakers already embracing trust-based approaches and offers peer learning, guidance, and resources to help members build stronger, more collaborative relationships with their partners.

Trust-Based Philanthropy shifts power dynamics by prioritizing relationships, transparency, and unrestricted support to build more equitable partnerships.
